Founded in 1927 in New York City, Eugenia Poir produced special cloth dolls under the direction of partner Alvin Gray. The company was also part of The French Dollmakers. The dolls were initially designed and manufactured in France and mainly measure between 16 and 23.5 inches in height. However, the company stopped its activities in 1935. The dolls were made of cloth, usually with pressed felt or bodies of fabric and cotton. These were also articulated in the neck, hip and shoulder areas and also had a distinguishable protruding section in the front and back of the lower torso. The features of the face were painted and they had eyes wide open to the side.

Another distinguishing feature of their dolls made with felt were the dotted eyebrows. The upper lashes were made of real lashes while the lower ones were painted. His mouth was also shaped like a heart on his felt face. The all-cotton versions had lashes painted on top and bottom with single-shot painted brows. He still had the same side looking painted eyes, but the difference can be seen from his height as the cotton ones were 17 or 18 inches. A seam running from front to back in the center of the doll’s body is another indicator of Gre-Poir’s version of the cotton doll.

The disc joints of the cotton dolls were also found on the joint areas of the neck, hip and shoulders. Most of the dolls had glove-like hands with some finger stitching. Gre-Poir dolls were stuffed with excelsior or straw and her hair could be blonde or red mohair wigs. Her hair was available in various styles such as curly, bob and wavy. The dolls wore socks with three stripes on top on some of the models and these were paired with Mary Jane shoes.

Most of the dolls also had cardboard or cloth tags labeled “French Doll Makers” which had “The French Dollmakers / Name Of The Doll / My hair can be washed / Can be dry cleaned” stamp printed . Another interesting addition to her doll series was the smoking and musical boudoir dolls that wore stylish clothing and stylish accessories.

Those interested in collecting Gre-Poir dolls may have to scour the internet and auctions to find these rare collectibles. These cloth and felt dolls need special care and perhaps thanks to her natural fiber materials, they have made Gre-Poir’s creations one of the hardest dolls to find at the moment.
