UK toy suppliers are all regulated by the Toy (Safety) Regulations 2011 which means that all toys sold should carry the CE safety mark. This safety mark is your assurance that the item you are purchasing is safe and compliant with the requirements set for the sale of toys in the UK and the European Union.
If the products you like don’t carry the CE mark, it’s a good idea to shop around for similar ones that do. The last thing you want to do is buy a toy from an unscrupulous seller that could potentially be dangerous and harmful to your children. Unfortunately the market is saturated with this type and many of them can be found on well-known auction sites, most of the time sold directly from China. Don’t trust them! Buy from reputable UK based sellers who can ensure their products have been tested and compliant with regulations.
Toy safety information and EN71
Many standards are applicable to toy safety, and all electric toys should also comply with electrical safety standards. The EN71 toy standards have been applicable across the EU since 1990.
These standards apply to toys for children up to age 14 and will provide guidance on suitable age ranges for toys and all essential warnings for toys that are not suitable for children under the age of three. Some aspects of this legislation include toxicity, flammability and safety markings.
Toy manufacturers who do not meet these essential criteria could be found guilty of criminal offenses and fines or prison sentences could be imposed, while toys will be withdrawn from sale across the EU.
Some toys are excluded from this legislation and these include:
– Christmas decorations
– Children’s costume jewelery
– Toys and sports equipment
However, even excluded toys still need to meet all requirements of UK consumer safety laws, such as the Consumer Protection Act. Some of these essential testing requirements include:
– Flammability
– Components and electrical properties
– Any chemical properties
– Hygienic compliance
What should you do if you think a toy is unsafe
If you have purchased a children’s toy that you believe violates toy safety laws or has caused injury to your child, you can contact the Business Standards Office to report your concerns. They will carry out tests on the toy and, if necessary, can arrange for its immediate withdrawal from sale.
